History of Chartered Accountant Course:

The first professional accounting body of Chartered Accountants was initially established in Scotland in 1854. The Edinburgh Society of Accountants (1854), the Glasgow Institute of Accountants and Actuaries (1854) and the Aberdeen Society of Accountants (1867) were each granted a royal charter almost from their inception.

Qualification for ICAI Membership

Chartered Accountancy Course

First of all, the question arises who can enrol in CA Course?

Enrolment in CA courses can be done through various routes. One is the Foundation course route and the other is the Direct entry route. First, we will discuss the foundation course route, the most commonly used route.


1. Through Foundation Course route:

(i) Enrol for the Foundation Course after passing Class 10th Examination conducted by an examining body constituted by law in India or an examination recognized by the Central Government as equivalent thereto.

(ii) Register for the Foundation Course on or before the 1st day of January or the 1st day of July for the examination to be held in the months of May/June or November/December respectively.

(ii) Appear in Foundation Examination after appearing in the Senior Secondary Examination (10+2 examination) conducted by an examining body constituted by law in India or an examination recognised by the Central Government as equivalent thereto and on complying with (ii) above.

How to Register for CA Foundation:

CA Foundation Registration process includes filling up basic details online at ICAI official website and obtaining a user id, registration number, and password. This user id and password will further be used to download the admit card for the examination.

CA Foundation’s Paper Format:

There are four subjects in which two papers are subjective and the other two are objective.

The CA foundation examination result of May attempt announced in the month June-July and of November attempt, the results declared in January-February.

Passing Marks:

Students who pass the CA Foundation exams with a score of 40% in each subject or 50% overall are eligible for the CA intermediate course.


The course is valid for three years after registration, and students can take six attempts. They can reconsider their registration after it expires with nominal fees.

The course is valid for four years after registration, and students get eight attempts.

Before commencing the Articleship, a student has to undergo Four Weeks Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft skills (ICITSS) consisting of Courses on Information Technology and Orientation Course.

What is Articleship?

Articleship is an important part of the CA program structure to acquire on-the-job work experience of a professional nature. How to Register for Articleship:

For the articleship, CA Intermediate qualified candidates find CA companies that have openings for article trainees and have to notify the ICAI within 30 days of starting the training. They have to fill an Articleship Registration form and attach all required documentation with it. Candidates have to submit form number 102 and 103 to the ICAI, as well as articleship registration fees. Students need to score of 40% in each subject or 50% overall to pass the CA Final Course.


For Indian students, CA final registration fees for both groups: ₹ 22,000. 

For students from overseas, US$ 1000 for both groups.

The CA Final course’s exam fee or application fee is ₹ 3300/- for both groups, and ₹ 1800/- is for the CA Final Single Group.

  • The Final exams fee for students from overseas is US$ 550 for both groups.


The course is valid for five years after registration, and students can take ten attempts.

After clearing both groups of CA Final and successful completion of three years of practical training, students will acquire membership of ICAI family.

 Direct Entry Route

There is another entry route to CA course that is called Direct Entry Route through which graduates and post-graduates can enroll in it. Let’s see how a student can enroll in CA course through Direct entry route.

 I. Commerce Graduates/Post-Graduates (55%) or Other Graduates/Post-Graduates (60%):

(i) Enrol with the Institute for Intermediate Course.

(ii) Undergo Four Weeks Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft skills (ICITSS) consisting of Courses on Information Technology and Orientation Course before commencement of their articleship.

(iii) Register for Practical Training of three years.

(iv) Appear in Intermediate Examination on completion of 9 months of Practical Training on first day of the month in which the examination is to be held.

(v)Appear and pass in both groups of Intermediate Examination.

(vi) Register for CA Final Course.

(vii) Successfully undergo Four Weeks Advanced Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft skills (AICITSS) consisting of Courses on Advanced Information Technology and Management Communication Skills during the last two years of practical training but before appearing in the Final Examination.

 (viii) Appear in the Final Examination on completion of the practical training or while serving last 6 months of articled training on or before the last day of the month preceding the month in which the examination is to be held after successful completion of AICITSS.

(ix) Complete articled training of 3 years.

(x) Pass Final Examination.

xi) Enrol as a member of the ICAI and be designated as “Chartered Accountant”.
